Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease. It is transmitted by mosquitoes, and as such, we see cases fairly commonly in this region. Fortunately, heartworm disease is preventable. Prior to starting prevention, we will need to test your pet for heartworm disease. Once we know your pet’s heartworm status, we will discuss the types of preventatives available and help you choose the one that is most appropriate for your pet. Year round heartworm prevention is strongly recommended. We will then recheck a heartworm test once yearly to confirm a negative status and make sure your pet stays healthy.

Year round flea and tick prevention is strongly recommended in North Georgia and Western North Carolina. Not only will it help protect your pets and your house from these pesky parasites, but it will protect your pets from flea and tick borne diseases. Lyme disease is the most well known, however, Ehrlichiosis, Anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever are examples of other tick borne diseases. Not all flea and tick preventatives are created equally. We will consult with you during your exam regarding the best product for your pet.
